"Fortunate Ones, fall in!"
Yuri took his position and waited for them to form a rank, and then addressed the group. "At ease!"
Stepping forward, he was dressed now in a slate gray, red trimmed uniform, reminiscent of old Combine dress uniforms in cut. Across the shoulders were twin claw insignia, forming paired bars.
"All of you have received your individual assessments. I want you to consider them fairly, and recognize that the lot of you have room to improve - we are in uncharted territory now, and your skill and teamwork is what will see you through this."
Casting his gaze up and down the line, he then declared. "We will form two primary lances and one reserve. I will take the reserve lance along with the trainees and damaged material - it will be used to plug any gaps or reinforce others in emergencies."
The arrangement was expected, the commander would defend the command center and client directly.
"The Vanguard Lance will be led by First Sergeant Dorgan Bruun. Accompanying him will be Sergeant Gillian Chow, Sergeant Freja Fogel, and Sergeant Andrea DeTroyes. Bruun, I expect you to serve as a team anchor around which your lighter comrades can maneuver. Your combat teams are Chow and Fogel, and Bruun with Detroyes, with firepower to cover short and long range if you must split your formation."
He took a breath, letting that sink in.
"The Fire Support Lance will be led by First Sergeant Maja Eklund. Accompanying her will be Sergeant Felicity C.M. Harrington, Sergeant Marik Ishtal, and Sergeant Snorri Tycho. Maja, I expect you to serve as a bulwark to free up your comrades to maneuver and fight with all they've got. Your combat teams are Eklund and Ishtal, along with C.M Harrington and Tycho."
A moment of silence, and then he walked a few paces to a crate, near waist height, and added, "I didn't have time to get us uniforms, but I do have rank insignia. Understand that we comport ourselves as a fighting force, and in battle I expect you all to respect the chain of command, and likewise I expect you not to abuse that power. We live or die as a unit, and nobody gets cast aside."
On top of the crate was a tray with rank pins. Six were a trio of copper studs in a triangle, and two were the same, save the top stud was silver.
"Congratulations, you're officially Fortunate Ones... and considering what the Captain has told me, if we'd had that malfunction on any other dropship, it'd have blown the whole thing, so I'd say we're pretty damn fortunate."
With a grin, he added, "As celebration, drinks and dessert are on the company tonight - just make sure you can report in the morning. Dismissed."
The official presentation done, he waited to hand out rank insignia when people came to claim them.
(Dorgan Bruun and Maja Eklund gain .5 rank.)
