Event: Relay Station (D15, LA)
Posted: Tue Dec 08, 2020 1:23 pm
Situation: The team has found a small building, mostly overgrown, after it showed up on mech sensors while the search was ongoing. Though it likely isn't the observatory, considering how small it is, it is still a potentially interesting lead, prompting Lucretzia to invite her staff to review the building and its equipment. Inside the small structure, they find a large array of mostly degraded equipment, but some of the machinery is still functional, indicated that it may still be connected to other parts of the original network, and that's worth checking out.
There are a total of three systems to review before programming attempts to reference broken equipment, causing a crash.
Participants: Echo Exploration Staff, up to two Fortunate Ones volunteers.
Rules: Each character has time to review a single system before the network server crashes. Each character taking part should choose to either help another character, or attempt to recover data from one of the three machines. Each machine can only be attempted once, so don't rush to attempt those rolls before people make rolls to assist.
Attempting to help: The character can roll either craft(electronics)/intelligence check against TN 15 or Computers/Perception at TN 15 to try and advise on which equipment is broken to avoid accessing dead data and causing an exception. On a success, you may give a free raise, plus one additional per two called raises on your roll, to any other character attempting a roll on one of the consoles.
Human Edge Observatory Internal Communications Network: This console appears to have information related to internal communications between staff and officials - gathering some of this data might help shine light on the purpose of the facility, but will require caution to avoid referencing inactive drives that might cause a cascading failure. This is achieved with a Computers(Coding)/Intelligence check vs TN 25.
Satellite Control System: This console appears to control satellite systems - which appear to be badly misaligned after the damage done both to the planet and many of the orbiting objects. That said, there appear to be a handful still functional, so someone with a good grasp of code and astrological physics might be able to determine how to get them back in useful orbits with their limited fuel allotments. This is a sequence of rolls - first a Science(Physics)/Intelligence roll at a TN of 25, and then a Computer(Coding)/intelligence roll at a TN of 20.
Human Edge Observatory Broadcast Center: This console appears to be responsible for transmitting messages from the observatory back out to repeaters around the planet - the jumbled message previously picked up is still stuck on loop inside. It might be possible to get more information about how to unscramble that message from this console, but it won't be easy to do without triggering broken functions and locking the console. This will require a Computers(Encryption/Decryption)/Intelligence check against a TN of 30.
Results:
Each console successfully unlocked will provide a unique benefit to the company, either in the form of new information or useful tools for future encounters.
