As the Calico began to unbutton the main doors, the watch stander called the captain to the bridge.

Then Alexei called Yuri and Lucretzia.

The three of them gazed at the exterior camera and it's slightly grainy footage. Outside the Dropship, sitting about perfectly in the kill zone of the defensive guns, were three antique combat vehicles and a single battlemech, standing proud and defiant.

"This is the Sheriff of Human Edge. I am here to inform you that you are illegally trespassing on private property, and have broken the noise ordinances of our city. I must respectfully demand that you turn yourselves in, peacefully."

The voice was rough, the sound of a man who'd been smoking a long time, or possibly just lived a life where he gargled sand for a living.

Alexei arched an eyebrow. "I don't know about you two, but I like him already."

Lucretzia glared at the captain, and Yuri sighed. "We could wipe that little posse out in a matter of minutes. What kind of damn fool is he?"

Alexei laughed, but keyed up the microphone. "Sheriff, I appreciate your dedication, but we have suffered a breakdown and been forced off course - universal laws of necessity apply here. If you can put me in contact with the owner of this field, I will compensate any damages."

There was a pause as both Lucretzia and Yuri gave Alexei dumbfounded looks, and then Lucretzia nodded faintly. "Ok, so we pay a pittance to make a good impression. Good work Captain."

Yuri shook his head. "I can't believe you're letting this man threaten us."

"We aren't, we're respecting his possibly idiotic courage and purchasing access to his town and the information they can provide." Lucretzia snapped back.

Yuri sighed. "If you say so. I think anyone who would a dropship with an Urbanmech is either insane, or astonishingly dumb. I'm not sure either option is of much use to us... but I guess I do respect the nerve. All right, I'm sold. We play nice with the Sheriff."

The three of them glanced back at the video as the sheriff responded. "I see. Well, you fix that... leak... you've got. I'll make sure the Cristoffersons know you'll pay for the damages. Don't you cause trouble now." Turning, the little mech began to toddle away, passed by the antique tanks, who seemed a little big more eager to escape firing range than the mech was.

Yuri couldn't help but smile a little. It was a cute Urbanmech.
