The battle was growing more like the sort of down and dirty brawl that periphery mechwarriors knew - a drawn out slugging match where pilots did their utmost to keep themselves alive as things got close in and personal.
The Phoenix rose into the sky once again, balancing on twin pillars of flame to land back up astride the hill, firing a shot from the PPC at the distant Jenner, but unfortunately the fast moving target and adjustments for jumping barely threw off Felicity's aim. The Jenner couldn't respond, however, as it was being rushed by both the Stinger and the Commando, who let loose with everything they had. Lasers flashed through the air, and missiles spiraled outward, but in the end only the desperate shot of two medium lasers from the Jenner struck home, smashing into the chest of the commando and scoring away most of the remaining armor. (1 hit to CT, 1 glancing hit to CT, 7 damage.)
While this happened, the Dragon which had strode forward found itself suddenly confronted by a Thorn. Surprised by the audacity of the mech which weighed one third as much, the Grand Dragon let loose with two medium lasers, scoring a blow against the right torso of the smaller mech(1 hit to RT, 5 damage), but in return the Thorn spat two lasers of it's own, and for the first time so far, hit, an emerald beam smashing directly into the canopy of the Grand Dragon, searing the pilot and causing minor cuts as superheated metal shattered into tiny fragments... or that's how it would have gone in a live battle. (1 hit to the HD, glancing blow, 2 damage, 1 pilot injury, pilot remains conscious)
Then the Grand Dragon and the Thorn both struck, the Thorn twisting and kicking out, ducking under the massive right arm of the Dragon as it swung the armored Particle Projection Cannon like a club, narrowly missing the cockpit of the Thorn. In turn, the smaller mech mashed it's foot into the Dragon's right leg(hit Kick, 4 damage), shearing off armor and making a horrid groan of tortured metal. The Grand Dragon staggered, but did not fall. (Pilot check success to avoid knockdown)
The Thorn had certainly gotten attention, now, and the Grand Dragon rotated deeper into the woods, seeking a better angle to target the smaller mech. The Jenner, in turn, rotated, firing jump jets to lurch into the sky, a short hop carrying into the thick stand of trees across the road, landing facing the two light mechs in pursuit, gaining cover and a line of fire in the same motion.
