Day 17 (Dec 16-19)

Early in the morning, Alexei met with Yuri, discussing some readings his ship had picked up on the way in. It was largely lost in the chaos of defensive preparations, but Yuri called out a team of infantry to go and search a nearby cliff.

A few hours later, the team unearthed a hidden hangar sheltered beneath a cliff overlooking the base, in which an empty Leopard dropship had been sitting, the path to the hangar lost beneath several feet of snow. The exact nature of the sensor readings hadn't been explained, but that detail was lost in the hustle of crew attempting to get ready. The air was thick with that strange anticipation before battle which made time feel as though it crawled past at a snail's pace, yet the day was still gone all too quickly.

Soon the satellite grid confirmed the three dropships were coming in for landings - two spheroid craft headed toward Limbo, a Union and a Lion class, while the Leopard veered off, aiming toward Asphodel. As night fell over the planet, the landing dropships could be seen, each group escorted by a pair of aerospace fighters, the massive plumes of flame lighting the night sky like shooting stars... only far more ominous.

The enemy landing zones were far to exposed to risk an attack in which the force could be encircled, and so Yuri directed his own forces to take positions at each end of the canyon entrance - ready to offer a similar defense to the previous battle - holding the enemy off and bleeding them before falling back. This time, however, they couldn't leave too quickly - the defenses were having trouble coming online, and the techs were still ironing out the last few issues with the guns - so the mechs would need to buy time before withdrawing.

There was a tension in the air as a dark night swallowed up the enemy leaving the lights cast by their dropships - this fight was coming unseen by the naked eye - the enemy only visible through the night scopes and thermal optics.

Events:
In the Dark of the Night (EN) - Limbo - Mech Combat
Frozen Forest (EN) - Limbo - Mech Combat
Blind the Eye (EN) - Asphodel - Optional - Mech Combat - Extremely Dangerous

Weather (Asphodel): The temperature holds steady under a rumbling cloud cover - threatening rain that doesn't ever come, rising to low 50sF (10C) as the day wears on. Wind speeds rise through the day, until strong gusts are sending any loose papers or hats flying in the wind.
Weather (Limbo): The weather in Limbo is extremely stable, with highs near 31F (0C), barely below freezing, and lows dropping some near -10F (-23C) at night. Traveling outside in Limbo at night without a heated cabin (such as a mech or vehicle) will inflict 2d10 damage (not exploding) per thread, reduced by hostile environment suits as normal. During the afternoon clouds blow in, and as evening comes, snow begins to spiral down from the sky, only growing heavier as night falls.

Special Rules: Threads outside the Calico or Jacob's Redoubt by members of the Echo Exploration team must include at least 1 member of the Fortunate Ones as security, or the Fortunate Ones will suffer a breach of contract.)

Current rules of engagement: Weapons free when encountering Slate Eater vehicles or personnel - all other locals are fire only when fired upon.
