Hunting activities behind them, Bruun had coaxed Colette to take a walk out away from the Calico perimeter where they wouldn't be too disruptive. He'd given the security team a heads up that they'd be firing small arms and the guards needn't be concerned, and the new lieutenant's insignia on his collar had probably helped him get more latitude than others might.

Over a small hill from the Calico, facing another hill to help catch any spent bullets, Bruun pulled a few paper targets and small metal stakes from his pack. As he set the targets up for them, he said, "To help me with not worrying about you, I'd like to see how good of a shot you are." Bruun smiles. "Just for practice of course. It's not a competition," he says, voice betraying that he thinks he knows how a competition would turn out.

Colette nodded to Bruun. "So you want to assess my skill. I may surprise you, Oso... I mean Bruun" She giggled at her slip. She had her pistol and some knives from the kitchen. She was aware that they were going to practice shooting but she also needed to sharpen her throwing skill.

Oso? I know that word from somewhere. Bruun gives her a questioning look but it doesn't last.

"So it's about 25 feet to the first targets, 50 feet to the next, and 75 to the last ones," he says pointing. "They ain't real tough, but each one should take a few shots before it's ripped up. And, uh," he notices she's brought knives. "I have a couple more I can set for those." He says with an indulgent smile.

She nodded. "Let me see..." She shot a volley of 3 shots to the 25 ft target. Two of the shot hit the target off to the right and one was way out of the pile. She let another volley on the 50 ft mark and one was quite on target and 2 went low.

Bruun smiles approvingly. "That's good. Those ain't big targets. Hit a person like that and they won't keep coming." He thinks for a moment. "Have you ever shot someone before?"

She looked at Bruun and shook her head. "I barely use my firearm. " She pointed to her knife. "I have stabbed some people but in self defense. Some people zink zat zey could take advantage of me because of my niceness..." Colette lowered her head not to proud of her doing. She shook off the memory and looked up at Bruun with a bit of a frown. "It was self defense... ze person still lives, not ze spy but ze one zat crossed ze line."

Bruun feels a hot flash of anger at anyone laying a hand on Colette. It's not hard to see in his eyes, but he keeps his composure. Mostly.

"I don't," he starts to say angrily, but he stops and looks at the ground. With a deep breath, he gets ready to try again. "I don't. Respond well. To people who threaten women and children." He flexes his hand into a fist a few times, and it seems to help settle him down.

"I'm sorry that you had to do that," he says sympathetically. "But I'm glad you're safe." He takes a step toward her, arms starting to rise to give her a hug, but hesitating. "Uh, I'm... here for you," he says a little awkwardly, unsure what to do in the moment.

Colette continued to smile and noted his anger. To her nothing melts away anger that a nice hug and little peck on the cheeks. The girl didn't care about awkwardness, she just cared about the angry man. "Come on..." She wrapped her arms around his waist and gave the man a squeeze.

Bruun rapidly melts into the hug. "The ice of a cold anger melted by the fire of Colette," he says quietly. It comes out like a line from a poem, but he doesn't explain.

After a brief time in the hug, Bruun recalls, "Earlier you called me Oso. I feel like I should know that word. What does it mean?"

Colette giggled. "Well, Lizy and I were talking about how you guys have call names... and I really wanted to give you a nickname you know... an I zought Señor Oso. I remember we talked about Goldilocks some time ago and you really are sort of like... well no offense Bruun...Bear." She giggled.
