Day 2 (Nov 20-23)
Yuri Creed, clearly sleep deprived, was sitting on a small crate, on the opposite side of a larger crate which was serving as a table. The birds were chirping as the morning sun finally began to light the world around them. Across from him sat the Sheriff and a local man. The Local man was a tall and thin black man with graying hair, neatly cropped beard, and wrinkles that spoke of a life spent in honest labor under a weak sun.
Beside him, the sheriff was also seated. A slightly chubby Hispanic man with a magnificently bushy mustache, he wore large sunglasses, a blue starched shirt with khakis, and a wide brimmed hat. Alexei stood nearby, observing.
"I don't understand what's wrong with our offer - we're willing to pay him more than the price of the barn, and the land." Yuri tried to emphasize the point by tapping the stack of CBills on the table. He was still wearing his flak best, hadn't showered, and desperately wanted a cup of coffee, but the locals had demanded this be dealt with. No word about the chaos last night... and Yuri was keeping it that way until he had more information.
"I told you, money won't shelter my cattle, what's left of them, and it won't feed my family this winter." The man didn't sound angry, just disappointed. "I have three kids, mister, and six grandchildren. Your space ship burnt half our harvest to ash."
The sheriff interjected. "That money's no good here, either. You said yall'd pay back Mr. Jackson, and I expect all of ye to make good on that."
Yuri rubbed at his eyes, and then said, as calmly as he could. "I don't just have a barn to give you, Mr. Jackson. We could give you some rations, but I doubt your family would care for the flavor, and I can't let my own people go hungry."
Mr. Jackson shrugged. "We won't mind the taste, you don't know my wife. She could make mud delicious. If it can be eaten, we can make do with it."
Alexei coughed, and interjected. "We do have some frozen goods which are... old. They won't taste very good at all, but I do know they haven't spoiled because they've never been unsealed, and the 'use-by' date is 3425, so you have three centuries of shelf life on them." Taking a swig from his flask, he put it away, and added, cheerfully, "I'm sure the Chief would be glad to be rid of them, in all honesty."
Yuri glanced, incredulously at the captain, and then shrugged.
"That just leaves the barn."
Turning back to the Sheriff, Yuri started to speak, but the man plowed on. "You have company full of strong young folks, and some mighty big machines. Seems to me you could build a new one."
Flabbergasted, Yuri stared at the man in silence, before weighing the options, and finally, wearily, muttering, "Yes... I guess we could."
