Maja can't see the thoughtful look on Bruun's face. "Yeah, I reckon luck can change."

"Star League was... like a big government, for all the planets. A long time ago. I read about it when I was a kid. Some people thought it was good, some thought it was terrible. Like a lot of things, it's probably best left in the past." He sighs, then switches to the optimistic side: "But they had good tech, so maybe there's really good stuff in that wreck."

She doesn't fully understand but it makes some kind of sense, the further back you went the stranger everything got.

"Ah, then I think it is good.....Although, if their tech was good why is there no more Star League?"

"Well, I don't remember the details, but just like any good or powerful thing that someone has, other people wanted to take it away. Usually a group of rich or noble people with nothing better to do with their time than figure out how to take things," the scorn in Bruun's voice is heavy. "Anyway, I think they had a big war and in the end nobody got the Star League. It just fell apart and we were left with the Great Houses," the scorn continues.

Bruun chuckles. "Yes exactly. The whole of human history: those with the most somehow still keep wanting more. And a lot of people with little or nothing get crushed under foot."

Bruun resists scratching his beard as he ponders the mixed metaphors. "Rii--yeah. Yeah, I reckon that's right. And mechwarriors can be pretty fortunate. A lot of times, we are the boot."

"Naw," Bruun said, "I reckon the major is good people. Seems like he really doesn't want people getting hurt if we can avoid it. Which..." He thinks of the previous night, the teen who'd almost been killed for falling in with a bad crowd, "Well, we'll just try to keep as many people alive as we can."

She said, attempting to daintily pilot the mech around a copse of trees
