The massive towers had likely held hundreds of people, maybe even thousands, once upon a time. Now they were abandoned, and clearly quite hazardous to attempt to enter.
Still, they made impressive landmarks, and as they began to climb into the mountains, would serve as a good reference point if they got lost.
The ground was rapidly growing hilly, the path winding and encountering unexpected rises and drops, forcing them to travel slowly. The woods were getting thicker, but it definitely seemed they were getting into the mountains themselves now - the earth beginning to sprout rocky outcroppings between the trees, cold wind rustling the canopy as they passed below.
