Re: Event: Preparation in Depth (D4, LM, Briefing Room)

Bruun had been there from the beginning, still trying to show Creed he was taking this job -- the whole stupid, expanded job -- seriously. He seemed his usual chipper self, which was to say he wasn't chipper at all. His top complaint of the day, though he wasn't talking too much about it, was Freja's grounding. She seemed... Ok yesterday? Like, ok for Fogel anyway.

He sits quietly off to one side of the group, though he still manages a smile for anyone who catches his attention.

Re: Event: Preparation in Depth (D4, LM, Briefing Room)

Yuri waited until the room had filled. Then he stood, offering a crisp salute as greeting. "Welcome, Fortunate Ones. At ease."

Standing by the holotank, he pulled up a map of asphodel.

"I've called this meeting for us to plan our defense. I didn't want to finalize any plans without at least hearing any feedback first. We currently tabulate that they will land at, or near, the Starport. This means our defensive options take a few different paths. While I favor a defense in depth headed east and then south toward Calico, I cannot guarantee they'll ignore the settlement... and there are some who would advocate an immediate strike upon the enemy before they can unload - if we got under the guns of the dropship somehow, we might be able to capture it before they can disembark - but I would be honest, the idea is more than risky."

Pointing at the landing zone, which sat a few miles north of the Human Edge settlement, he gestured to the room, "If anyone has preliminary thoughts, feel free, otherwise I'm willing to outline my initial concepts and we can refine from there."

James was there. He wasn't sure why. But he was. He just continued to drink his coffee until he had something worth saying.

"Begging the major's pardon," Bruun speaks up more formally than he's used to, "But do we have any sense of the size of the force aboard that dropship? Our ability to succeed in some strategies depends on our comparative advantages. Sir."

"Oh, it's great to have someone this knowledgeable as well. Did you know those ronin from before?"

" I don't know these in particular so far. Their insignia is one I don't know. What I do know is that most of the Rasalhague Regulars who threw in with the Ronin Wars... They were true believers. The House of Light kept an incredibly tight leash on them, in case of, you know, someone bolting off in a Hussar in the dead of night because purges were starting. "

Snorri shrugs. " But to tie it to the Major's question: I bet these guys are fanatics. A group like us, or a functional army might retreat if they get sucker punched hard out of the gate because they know they can't hold any gains they take. I doubt these guys will think so clearly. The Major's defense in detail seems like better odds"

Snorri leans in. " The thing is, even if they go for the settlement, I think it affords us a chance. We've built up some goodwill. Maybe we can insert some people who can spy on our new friends"

" Second, what do we do with that other Merc company? They might take up the offer we turned down. Unless we make them a better offer... Or one they can't refuse"

Marik, who had been here the entire time, nodded and listened as DJ spoke.

When he felt he could meanginfully contribute he would, but Pyramid conflicts were likely very different to normal space ones.

“It seems unlikely they are worried with the locals’ welfare.” Andrea added, “And the village would give them some cover. Regardless of if they mean to attack it or not.” She looked directly at Yuri, “If their commander of their unit has familiarity with you sir...they might try to exploit the civilians intentionally if they feel that would draw you into an unfavorable position. The local town may be condemned regardless of our actions.”

“Davion doctrine was to never let a landing come in unopposed if it could be helped, as you know the moment of loading and unloading is a hazardous time for a dropship. I am not sure that is feasible...what sort of dropship do they have?” She sighed and rubbed her head, “Again though I have to wonder about their commander’s familiarity with you sir and perhaps yours with theirs. Some ancient Earth general once said something like ‘the general who knows the most about himself and the other general probably wins.’ It would certainly help with planning.”

Re: Event: Preparation in Depth (D4, LM, Briefing Room)

As the meeting was called she would have given a salute. Then she'd have settled back down to listen.

Felicity spoke up in agreement of Andrea's idea. She didn't think it would end the conflict, but it'd give them some initial advantages. "I agree with Andrea. A dropship is a big, easy target. If we know their likely landing then we can prepare an ambush. At the very least, if we can damage their dropship then we'll likely finish our own repairs first. That means we can change continent or even run completely. If we can get the hangars open at the starport then we can hide mechs there. Do we have any mines or ordinance we can set traps with?" Felicity looks up to gather her thoughts. "They'll likely have aerospace support so that hampers a long engagement, but we can't not use the opportunity to hit them without their land forces being in use. I mean, any aerospace they have will always remain a risk, yea? At the very least, we could hit the dropship just after it lands, from long range, or when they are unloading. Taking out their supplies will reduce their ability to fight. We can do that possibly from outside their dropship gun range. Some LRMs into the mech bay as soon as the doors open would be great. We found an extended range PPC too, si? That could be used to hit them repeatedly from outside their range if it still works. Other than that, we ought to have someone in one of the hover APCs to spy on them when they do unload. To see what they have."

She cleared her throat and pulled down her hat. She was wearing it again today. Sitting up straight she continued with some hesitation. "There is a lot we don't know. Whether they'll attack Human Edge, try to hire the pirates or just make a beeline for us. All of that's speculation. We can only go on known information, si? We don't know the enemy so we need recon. Until then, we should plan for the worse case scenario. If they have a full company of heavier mechs then we do, we need to fight in terrain we can use hit and run tactics. Ideally, we need to separate them. The Calico being here and just a few klicks away from them completely hampers that, or any defense in depth. They only need to unload, gather up and head here in one big group and we're forced into a pitched battle we'll be really disadvantaged in." She shakes her head. "Better to abandon the dropship and fight with guerrilla tactics if it came to that. Wear them down. No, the only chance we have, if they're as strong as can be, is hitting them early, throwing them on the back foot and getting them wound up, then using that to lure their forces to split them apart." She motioned her hands moving away from each other, her right then forming a fist that she split burst open. "Hit each element separately. Taking them down piecemeal in terrain that favours us. Otherwise we can only hope our new mechs mean we have some parity with them and we can fight them head on."

She scratched her cheek. "If they're frenzied hardliners they'll be after combat as soon as can be. The long travel time will only have made them tense. If we can attack them early, taunt them and break off I'm sure some will want to give chase. We can lure them into ambushes without letting them gather and cool down. Yea, that's all I can think of." Lifting her hands, showing she was done, Felicity sat back down.

Yuri listened in silence, accepting all the input.

He glanced at Alexei. "Captain, I believe you had thoughts on air cover."

Re: Event: Preparation in Depth (D4, LM, Briefing Room)

Alexei nodded, standing up and glancing around the room. "I intend to provide initial harassment of their landing - it should enable us to see what air cover they have, if any, and potentially give them pause - after that, I'll return for repair and re-load, to provide top cover in any ground battles."

Glancing at those assembled, he added, "If we had a 2nd pilot, that would be ideal, but we don't. I'll do my best to keep them off your backs - I suspect I'll have a superior craft, if nothing else."
