"Study files?"

He looked surprised. "What are you studying? Me?"

[Karlotta Roth]

"Yeah. The Federated Commonwealth is working on a human system restructuration program, related to lostech we found recently under the hands of the pirate warlords."
Her tone was like someone telling a joke but still trying to make it sound normal speech.
"You are a workfile, silly. The study ones are the military course and Filtvelt. I used a computer instead of a notebook to study, so things are there. Some patient inputs I'm never going to use anymore. Class notes. Some books as well."

[Samuel Levi]

"Classes?"

He furrowed his brow. "Aren't you already a doctor?"

[Karlotta Roth]

"Yeah. I kept them saved in case I need to consult them back again, you never know. So... It's kind of worth golden for me. You can see or ask me to delete your file if you wish as well within your right. But it's just a very long list of data for me to track over the days to monitor your recovery. You seem to be rather well, though, so I didn't yet. I may need to after this day because sudden atmospheric changes don't take easily on some people, and you still got two scars on the lung."

[Samuel Levi]

"Oh... ok. Well... I don't mind if you have the notes."

He shrugged. "It's not like it hurts me."

[Karlotta Roth]

"That's it, then. I'll go treat the civilians, if you want to come. I would appreciate the help."

[Samuel Levi]

"Sure. I could learn something."

He set down the gun, tucking his hands in the pockets of the oversized jacket. "Might as well."

There was a hint of... friendliness, perhaps... but it was well buried beneath that deadpan exterior.

She chuckles to herself and messed his hair up. Karlotta hanged in thight on both the mantle and her medkit again, walking down the corridors.
Her last time on duty would be a sweet one at least. She chose the medical career because she wanted to save people. Compared to an office doctor, she did experiment this far better directly on the field, where most of her treatment was applied on life and death scenarios.
Her calling... Was this, really. And not anything else.
